“They Were All Together in One Place” — The Promise of Pentecost

Before the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Apostles gathered together in prayer with the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Upper Room, waiting for the promise of Christ to be fulfilled.

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Today, May 15, 2026, begins the traditional Novena to the Holy Spirit in preparation for Pentecost Sunday, which this year falls on May 24, 2026.

What Is a Novena?

A novena is a nine-day prayer devotion rooted in Sacred Scripture and Catholic tradition. The word novena comes from the Latin novem, meaning “nine.”

The very first novena was prayed by the Apostles and the Blessed Mother between the Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost. For nine days they remained together in prayer, waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Catholics continue this beautiful tradition today by praying novenas for special intentions, spiritual renewal, healing, guidance, peace, and deeper union with God.

The Novena to the Holy Spirit is one of the oldest and most powerful novenas in the Church because it honors the Third Person of the Holy Trinity — the One who sanctifies, strengthens, guides, and transforms souls.

What Is Pentecost?

Pentecost is one of the most important feast days in the Catholic Church. Celebrated fifty days after Easter, Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and marks the birth of the Church.

At Pentecost, fearful disciples became courageous witnesses of Christ. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they went forth proclaiming the Gospel to all nations.

The Holy Spirit bestowed gifts upon the Apostles — wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — equipping them for their mission.

Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit is still active today. He comforts, convicts, heals, strengthens, and leads souls closer to Jesus Christ.

The History of the Novena to the Holy Spirit

The Novena to the Holy Spirit traces its origins directly to Scripture.

After Jesus ascended into Heaven, He instructed the Apostles not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for “the promise of the Father” (Acts 1:4). The Apostles, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary, entered the Upper Room and devoted themselves to prayer for nine days.

On the tenth day, Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon them in wind and fire.

Because of this, the Novena to the Holy Spirit is considered the first novena ever prayed.

Over the centuries, the Church has encouraged the faithful to pray this novena between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. It is a time of spiritual preparation and openness to the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.

The fruits of the Holy Spirit — charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control — transform the Christian soul and help us live more fully in the image of Christ.

1. Who Was Present in the Upper Room at Pentecost?
   

   Scripture tells us that after the Ascension of Jesus, the Apostles gathered together in the Upper Room in constant prayer as they awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit. Present were the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles chosen by Christ:
