Saint Rita: Patron Saint of Impossible Causes and Difficult Marriages

Every year on May 22, the Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Rita of Cascia — one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic faith. Who Was Saint Rita?

Saint Rita was born in Italy in the late 1300s in the town of Roccaporena near Cascia. From a young age, she desired to dedicate her life completely to God and become a nun. However, in obedience to her parents, Rita married a man named Paolo Mancini instead.

Her marriage was difficult, as Paolo was known to be harsh and quick-tempered. Despite years of suffering and heartbreak, Rita remained deeply rooted in her faith in Jesus Christ. Rather than responding with anger or bitterness, she turned constantly to prayer, asking God for peace within her home and the conversion of her husband’s heart. Through Rita’s patience, humility, gentleness, and forgiveness, Paolo eventually changed and became more loving and devoted to God.

Tragically, Paolo was later killed in a family feud. Rita’s two sons wanted revenge for their father’s death, but Rita prayed fervently that they would never commit mortal sin through vengeance. Soon after, both sons became ill and passed away peacefully after reconciling with God.

After losing her husband and sons, Rita sought entrance into the Augustinian convent in Cascia. At first she was refused because of the violent conflict connected to her husband’s family. Through prayer and miraculous intervention, the families reconciled, and Rita was finally accepted into the convent, where she spent the rest of her life in prayer, penance, humility, and love for Christ.

Saint Rita’s life reminds us that holiness is often lived quietly through daily sacrifices, hidden suffering, patience, forgiveness, and trusting God even in difficult seasons of life.

Why Is Saint Rita Shown With a Thorn in Her Forehead?

One of the most recognizable images of Saint Rita is the wound on her forehead. This wound came from a mystical experience while she was meditating deeply on the suffering of Jesus during His Passion.

As Rita prayed before a crucifix, she asked Jesus to allow her to share in His suffering. Suddenly, one of the thorns from Christ’s crown pierced her forehead. The wound became visible and remained with her for the rest of her life. It was painful and often carried an unpleasant odor, causing Rita to suffer greatly in hidden humility.

This thorn wound symbolizes her deep union with Christ. Saint Rita understood that holiness does not mean a life without suffering — it means trusting God through suffering. She offered her pain as an act of love for Jesus.

Near the end of her life, Saint Rita became very ill and was bedridden for several years. Even in sickness, she remained filled with joy, patience, and deep trust in God. One of the most famous stories from her final days involves a cousin who came to visit her. Rita asked for a rose from the garden of her childhood home — even though it was the middle of winter. Miraculously, a single blooming rose was found growing among the snow-covered garden. Because of this miracle, roses are now closely associated with Saint Rita and are often blessed on her feast day, May 22.

After her death, many miracles were reported through her intercession, and devotion to her quickly spread throughout the Church. Her body is still incorrupt and venerated today in the Basilica of Saint Rita in Cascia, Italy.
