Who Was Saint Maria Goretti?
Saint Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy, to Luigi and Assunta Goretti. She was the third of six children in a poor but deeply faithful Catholic family.
When Maria was still a young child, her family moved to the countryside in search of work. Life was difficult, and they shared a farmhouse with another family, the Serenellis. Despite their poverty, Maria's parents taught their children to trust God, pray faithfully, and love one another.
Tragedy struck when Maria was just nine years old. Her father died of malaria, leaving her mother to care for the family alone. Maria took on many responsibilities beyond her years, helping with cooking, cleaning, caring for her younger siblings, and supporting her mother however she could.
Even amid hardship, Maria remained cheerful, obedient, and devoted to Jesus. She attended Mass whenever possible, prayed the Rosary, and longed to receive Holy Communion.
The Final Test of Her Faith
On July 5, 1902, eleven-year-old Maria was alone at home when Alessandro Serenelli, a young man who had lived with the Goretti family, attempted to assault her.
Maria courageously resisted, choosing to remain faithful to God despite the danger she faced. She repeatedly told Alessandro that his actions were sinful and would offend God.
In a violent rage, Alessandro stabbed Maria multiple times before fleeing.
Maria was taken to the hospital, where doctors performed surgery without anesthesia. Throughout her suffering, she displayed extraordinary peace and trust in God.
When asked whether she forgave the man who attacked her, Maria responded:
"Yes, for the love of Jesus, I forgive him... and I want him to be with me in Heaven."
The following day, July 6, 1902, Maria died after receiving the Sacraments.
She was only eleven years old.
The Power of Forgiveness
Perhaps the most remarkable part of Saint Maria Goretti's story is not simply her courage but her forgiveness.
Before her death, she freely forgave Alessandro Serenelli.
Years later, while serving a prison sentence, Alessandro experienced a profound conversion. He later shared that Maria appeared to him in a dream, offering him fourteen white lilies as a sign of forgiveness and God's mercy.
After his release from prison, Alessandro sought forgiveness from Maria's mother, Assunta Goretti. She embraced him, saying that if her daughter had forgiven him, she could do no less.
Alessandro eventually became a faithful Catholic, spending many years living a life of prayer and repentance.
Saint Maria Goretti's forgiveness became the beginning of another person's conversion—a beautiful witness to the transforming power of God's mercy.
Canonization of Saint Maria Goretti
Saint Maria Goretti was beatified in 1947 and canonized on June 24, 1950, by Pope Pius XII.
More than 500,000 people attended her canonization in Rome, including her mother, Assunta Goretti—the first mother ever to witness the canonization of her own child.
Today, pilgrims from around the world visit her shrine in Nettuno, Italy, asking for her intercession.
