Our Lady of Fatima: The Mother Who Leads Us Closer to Jesus
On May 13, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Fatima — a powerful reminder that Heaven is never far from us. On this sacred feast of Our Lady of Fatima, we remember the Blessed Mother’s appearances to three humble shepherd children in Portugal in 1917.
Through the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, Mary came not to draw attention to herself, but to lovingly lead souls back to her Son, Jesus Christ.
Her message at Fatima was simple and urgent:
Pray the Rosary. Repent. Trust God. Stay close to Jesus.
More than a century later, the message of Our Lady of Fatima remains just as powerful and relevant today.
Jesus Came to Us Through Mary
One of the most beautiful truths of the Catholic faith is that God chose Mary to bring Jesus into the world. Christ could have come any way He wished, yet He came through the loving “yes” of His mother.
Because Jesus came to us through Mary, the Church teaches that Our Lady of Fatima and all Marian devotion lead us closer to Him. She is not the destination — Jesus is. But she is the gentle mother who walks beside us, guiding us in love and faith.
At the wedding feast of Cana, her instruction reveals her mission clearly:
“Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5
This is the heart of devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. Mary never replaces Christ — she always leads us to Him. Through prayer, sacrifice, and trust in God, she teaches us how to remain faithful in every season of life.

Why Mary Is Depicted Crushing the Serpent
From the beginning of Scripture, God revealed that evil would not have the final victory.
In Genesis 3:15, God declares:
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
This passage, known as the Protoevangelium, foretells Christ’s victory over sin and Satan — a victory closely associated with Our Lady of Fatima in Catholic tradition.
The “woman” is understood as a foreshadowing of Mary, whose Son would defeat the power of the devil forever. This is why the Blessed Virgin Mary is often depicted standing on a serpent — symbolizing triumph over sin and evil.
Her strength does not come from herself, but from God alone. Through her faithful “yes,” she became part of God’s plan of salvation revealed more fully in the message of Fatima.
The Three Children of Fatima
In 1917, Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal:
- Lúcia dos Santos
- Saint Francisco Marto
- Saint Jacinta Marto
Mary appeared to them six times between May 13 and October 13, 1917 — beginning on what is now celebrated as the first feast day of the Fatima apparitions.
The children described Our Lady of Fatima as radiant and clothed in white, holding a Rosary. She asked them to pray the Rosary daily and delivered a message centered on repentance, peace, and conversion for the salvation of souls.
During the July 13, 1917 apparition, the children were given a powerful vision of the reality of the afterlife. All three saw a vision of hell, described by Lúcia as a vast sea of fire where souls suffered due to sin. The vision left a deep and lasting impression on them and became a defining moment in the Fatima message, emphasizing the urgency of prayer, sacrifice, and conversion.
In addition to the vision of hell, Our Lady also made clear the reality of souls in need of purification, calling the children to pray and offer sacrifices for them. This understanding is often associated with the Church’s teaching on purgatory — the state of purification for souls who die in God’s grace but still need to be made fully clean before entering heaven. It further deepened their mission to intercede for souls through prayer, especially the Rosary.
Though very young, the children responded with extraordinary faith and courage. Francisco and Jacinta would later become the youngest non-martyr saints in the Church.
The Message of the Family in the Fatima Apparitions
Our Lady of Fatima revealed to the three shepherd children that a great spiritual battle would unfold in the world, and that the family would be at the center of this struggle. She emphasized that the final battle between God and Satan would be fought over the family—highlighting the importance of protecting marriage, living faithfully, and keeping God at the heart of family life. Through this message, she called the world to prayer, especially the Rosary, repentance, and deeper devotion to God in order to strengthen families and bring peace.
Two Our Lady of Fatima Prayers
1. The Fatima Prayer
One of the most well-known gifts from the apparitions is the Our Lady of Fatima prayer, also called the Fatima Prayer:
“O my Jesus, forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of hell,
lead all souls to Heaven,
especially those in most need of Thy mercy.”
This prayer is prayed after the Glory Be at the end of each decade.

2. The Pardon Prayer
Before the appearances of Our Lady of Fatima, an angel visited the children and taught them prayers of reparation and worship.

“O My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love Thee! And I ask forgiveness for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love Thee."

The Miracle of the Sun
The final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima on October 13, 1917, became one of the most extraordinary public miracles in history.
Nearly 70,000 people gathered in the fields of Fatima after Mary promised a visible sign. Witnesses reported the sun appearing to “dance” in the sky—spinning, changing colors, and seeming to plunge toward the earth before returning to its place. This event became known as the Miracle of the Sun.
Beyond the physical phenomenon, the miracle had a profound spiritual impact. While there is no exact recorded number of conversions, historical accounts consistently note that thousands of people experienced a deep conversion of heart, including skeptics and non-believers who were present that day. Many reported immediate repentance, renewed faith, and a return to prayer and the sacraments in the days and months that followed.

3. What came about the children of Fatima?
Francisco and Jacinta Marto, the youngest of the three Fatima visionaries, both died shortly after the apparitions in 1917.
Saint Francisco Marto became ill during the influenza epidemic and died on April 4, 1919 at just 10 years old. Saint Jacinta Marto also suffered from the same illness, enduring a longer period of sickness and offering her suffering for the conversion of sinners before she died on February 20, 1920 at the age of 9. Both Francisco and Jacinta were later canonized as saints by the Church, becoming the youngest non-martyr saints.
Lúcia dos Santos, the oldest of the three, lived a much longer life. She eventually became a Carmelite nun, taking the name Sister Lúcia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart. She spent her life in prayer and religious vocation, continuing to share the message of Fatima under obedience to the Church until her death in 2005 (age 97). Lúcia is not yet canonized as a saint, though her cause for canonization has been opened.
