June: The Month Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Share
Every year, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of June to the Sacred Heart of Jesus—a devotion that reminds us of Christ's immense love, mercy, and compassion for humanity. The image of the Sacred Heart is one of the most beloved symbols in the Catholic faith: the Heart of Jesus burning with love, wounded for our sins, and crowned with thorns as a sign of His sacrifice for us.
In a world that often feels cold, distracted, and distant from God, devotion to the Sacred Heart calls us back to the center of our faith: the tender and personal love of Jesus Christ.
Why Is June Dedicated to the Sacred Heart?
The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated each year in June, on the Friday following the octave of Corpus Christi. In 2026, the feast falls on June 12. Over time, the Church set aside the entire month as a special season to honor the Heart of Christ and meditate on His love for souls.
While devotion to the Sacred Heart has roots in Scripture and the Church's meditation on Christ's love, it was greatly spread through the visions received by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century. Jesus revealed His Sacred Heart to her, expressing His deep love for humanity and His sorrow over indifference and sin. He asked that His Heart be honored and that people turn to Him with trust, reparation, and love.
The Sacred Heart is not simply a symbol—it is a reminder that Jesus is fully alive, fully present, and continually pouring out grace upon the world.
The Visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

The devotion to the Sacred Heart that Catholics cherish today was largely spread through the life and revelations of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a humble Visitation nun in 17th-century France.
Long before receiving the visions that would change the course of her life, Margaret Mary endured many hardships. She lost her father at a young age and later suffered a debilitating illness that left her bedridden for several years. During this time, she developed a deep love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and found comfort in His presence amid her suffering.
After entering the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial, Margaret Mary experienced a series of visions of Our Lord. On December 27, 1673, while praying before the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus revealed His Sacred Heart to her. He showed her His Heart aflame with love for humanity, surrounded by a crown of thorns and surmounted by a cross.
Jesus spoke of His immense love for mankind and His sorrow over the indifference, ingratitude, and sin that wounded His Heart. In one revelation, He lamented that despite His great love for humanity, many hearts remained cold and indifferent in return. He entrusted Margaret Mary with a mission: to spread devotion to His Sacred Heart and encourage souls to respond to His love through prayer, trust, repentance, and frequent reception of the Eucharist.
Over the next eighteen months, Jesus continued to reveal His desires to her. He asked for devotion to the Sacred Heart through practices such as the Holy Hour, receiving Holy Communion on the First Friday of each month, and the celebration of a feast dedicated to His Sacred Heart. Through these revelations, Our Lord invited the faithful to draw closer to His Heart and to make reparation for the sins and indifference that so often wound Him.
Margaret Mary's revelations were initially met with skepticism and misunderstanding, even within her own convent. Yet she remained faithful and obedient through many trials. With the support of her spiritual director, Blessed Claude de la Colombière, devotion to the Sacred Heart gradually spread throughout France and eventually throughout the entire Church.
Today, every image of the Sacred Heart reminds us of the same message Jesus entrusted to Saint Margaret Mary centuries ago: His Heart burns with love for every soul and longs for us to draw near to Him.
What Does the Sacred Heart Represent?

The image of the Sacred Heart is rich with meaning:
- The flames represent Christ's burning love for humanity.
- The crown of thorns reminds us of the suffering He endured for our sins.
- The wound in His side points to His sacrifice on the Cross.
- The cross above the Heart proclaims victory through sacrificial love.
Together, these symbols reveal the depth of Christ's love—a love willing to suffer, sacrifice, and continually seek after souls. The Sacred Heart reminds us that God's love is not distant or abstract, but personal, living, and poured out for each one of us.
The Sacred Heart reveals both the humanity and divinity of Jesus. He is not distant from our struggles. He knows suffering, rejection, sorrow, and love. His Heart remains open to every soul who comes to Him.
A Devotion Rooted in Love and Mercy
At its heart, devotion to the Sacred Heart is an invitation to respond to Christ's love with our own. It encourages us to:
- Spend time with Jesus in prayer.
- Receive the Eucharist reverently and frequently.
- Practice acts of reparation for sin.
- Trust in His mercy.
- Grow in charity toward others.
The Sacred Heart reminds us that Christianity is not merely about rules, but about relationship—a relationship with a Savior who deeply loves His people.
Ways to Honor the Sacred HeartÂ
There are many beautiful ways families and individuals can grow closer to the Sacred Heart during this month.
Enthrone the Sacred Heart in Your Home
Contact the National Enthronement Center or your local diocese for guidance in enthroning your home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Â
The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart is much more than placing a sacred image in your home. It is a formal act of welcoming Jesus as the King and center of family life. Through this devotion, families consecrate themselves to the Sacred Heart and commit to living according to His love, mercy, and teachings.
Enthroning the Sacred Heart serves as a daily reminder that Christ desires to dwell within our homes, strengthen marriages, guide parents, bless children, and unite families in prayer. It encourages family members to participate faithfully in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, to practice charity toward one another, and to extend Christ's love to those in need.
At its heart, the Enthronement is an invitation to make the home a place where Jesus is honored, His presence is welcomed, and His Sacred Heart reigns in the everyday moments of family life.
Practice the First Fridays Devotion
One of the most well-known devotions associated with the Sacred Heart comes directly from the revelations given to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque.
Jesus asked that the faithful receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of each month for nine consecutive months in reparation for sins committed against His Sacred Heart. This devotion is often called the Nine First Fridays.
To observe this devotion, Catholics should:
- Receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of the month.
- Be properly disposed and in a state of grace when receiving Communion.
- Offer their Communion in a spirit of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
- Continue the practice for nine consecutive first Fridays.
This devotion is not meant to be viewed as a formula, but as an invitation to deepen one's relationship with Christ and respond more fully to His love and mercy.
Pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart
The Litany of the Sacred Heart is one of the Church's most beautiful prayers, meditating on the many attributes of Christ and His divine love. Through its invocations, we contemplate Jesus as patient and merciful, rich unto all who call upon Him, and the source of all consolation.
Praying the Litany during the month of June is a wonderful way to unite ourselves more closely to the Heart of Christ and to reflect upon His virtues in our daily lives.
Attend Eucharistic Adoration
The Sacred Heart devotion is deeply connected to the Eucharist. In her visions, Saint Margaret Mary often encountered Our Lord while praying before the Blessed Sacrament.
Spending time in Eucharistic Adoration allows us to sit quietly in Christ's presence, bringing Him our worries, joys, sufferings, and thanksgiving. As we gaze upon Him, we are reminded that the same Heart that burned with love for humanity continues to dwell among us in the Eucharist.
Even a few moments spent before the Blessed Sacrament can help draw us more deeply into the love of the Sacred Heart.
Practice Small Acts of Love
The Sacred Heart teaches us to imitate Christ's love in our everyday lives. While grand gestures have their place, holiness is often found in small and hidden acts of charity.
A kind word, an act of forgiveness, patience during a difficult moment, helping someone in need, or offering up a daily sacrifice can all become ways of consoling the Heart of Jesus and reflecting His love to others.
As Saint Margaret Mary learned, devotion to the Sacred Heart is ultimately not only about prayer—it is about allowing Christ's love to transform the way we live each day.
Bringing Devotion to the Sacred Heart into Daily Life

One of our favorite devotional items at Marie Madeleine is the Brazilian Wooden Heart Rosary – Sacred Heart of Jesus & Immaculate Heart of Mary. Handmade in Brazil, this unique rosary features wooden heart-shaped beads, each displaying the Sacred Heart of Jesus on one side and the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the other. Every bead serves as a reminder of the love, mercy, and maternal care found in the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, inviting you to draw closer to them through prayer.
Another beautiful resource is our My Daily Prayer Booklet, which includes a Daily Consecration Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Praying a daily consecration is a simple yet powerful way to entrust yourself and your family to Christ's loving Heart and renew your commitment to follow Him each day.

For those wishing to spend more time in prayer during the month of June, our Treasury of Novenas is a wonderful companion. This treasured prayer book contains more than 40 novenas, including a Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Sacred Heart of Jesus,
I place my trust in You.
Teach me to love as You love,
to remain faithful in suffering,
and to seek Your will in all things.
Draw my heart closer to Yours
and make my home a place of peace, prayer, and holiness.
Amen.
As we enter the month of June, may we draw nearer to the Heart of Christ and allow His love to transform our homes, our families, and our daily lives. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is not simply a devotion of the past—it is a living invitation to encounter the love of Christ today. His Heart remains open to every soul, offering mercy to sinners, comfort to the suffering, and peace to all who place their trust in Him.
