Happy Birthday Jesus: A Christmas Reflection on Keeping Christ at the Center of Christmas
Share
Christmas is not just a season—it is a celebration. At its heart, Christmas is the joyful celebration of a birthday: the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior. This Christmas reflection invites us to pause amid the lights, gifts, gatherings, and traditions, and return to the true meaning of Christmas. It is easy to lose sight of this simple yet profound truth—that Christmas is about God entering the world in the most humble way, choosing to dwell among us out of pure love.
At Marie Madeleine, we believe Christmas is an invitation—an invitation to slow down, open our hearts, and welcome Jesus anew. As we reflect on the meaning of Christmas, we are called to refocus our celebrations on Christ Himself and to remember why this holy season exists at all.
Preparing Our Hearts for His Arrival
The first Christmas did not begin with celebration—it began with obedience, trust, and a heartfelt “yes” to God’s will.
Mary’s Yes: The Annunciation
When the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, she was invited into God’s divine plan in a way that would change the world forever. Though she did not fully understand what lay ahead, Mary responded with complete trust and humility:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” — Luke 1:38
Mary’s yes teaches us how to prepare for Christmas—not with perfection, but with openness. As we await the birth of Christ, we are invited to echo her surrender, making room in our hearts for Jesus to dwell.
Joseph’s Yes: Faith in the Midst of Uncertainty
Joseph, too, was asked to trust God in a moment of great uncertainty. When an angel appeared to him in a dream, Joseph chose faith over fear, obedience over doubt:
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus.” — Matthew 1:20–21
Joseph’s quiet yes reminds us that faith is often lived out in action—through protection, sacrifice, and steadfast love. Together, Mary and Joseph model what it means to prepare a home for Christ.
The Beauty of Our Catholic Faith at Christmas
Christmas invites us to slow down and rest in the beauty of our Catholic faith. It is a time to spend intentional moments with Jesus—before the Nativity scene, at Mass, in prayer, and within the loving presence of the Holy Family.
As Catholics, we are blessed with rich traditions that draw us closer to Christ: the Sacraments, the liturgy, sacred imagery, and the gift of community. In reflecting on the meaning of Christmas, we are reminded that God’s love has already been poured out abundantly into our homes and hearts—but it is up to us to choose to receive it.
This season also calls us to cherish the gift of family. Just as Jesus was born into a family, we are invited to honor our own—creating memories, sharing meals, and celebrating together in gratitude and love.
Ways to Keep Christ at the Center of Christmas
1. Attend Confession
Christmas is a beautiful time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession prepares our hearts to welcome Jesus with peace and clarity, clearing away what weighs us down.
If you were unable to attend confession before Christmas, consider making it a priority before the year ends. There is no better way to prepare a dwelling place for Christ than by receiving His mercy and grace.
2. Attend Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Mass as a Family
The celebration of Christ’s birth is made complete at Mass. Gathering as a family to worship reminds us that Christmas is first and foremost about Christ’s presence—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—given to us in the Eucharist.
3. Give Gifts in Celebration of Jesus’ Birthday
Gift-giving is a beautiful tradition when it is rooted in love. As we exchange gifts, we remember that Jesus is the greatest gift of all, given freely to the world. When our giving flows from this truth, it becomes an expression of gratitude, generosity, and joy in celebration of His birthday.
At Marie Madeleine, we love encouraging gifts that quietly keep Christ present in everyday life. One meaningful example is our Holy Image Umbrellas—a truly unique Catholic gift for a pastor, deacon, a nun, a grandparent, parent, sibling, or dear friend. Used in ordinary moments, these umbrellas gently lift our eyes to the Holy Family, reminding us that even in life’s storms, Christ walks with us. Practical yet deeply devotional, they are gifts that carry faith beyond Christmas Day and into daily life.

4. Tell God What You Are Thankful For
Take time this Christmas to speak directly to God in adoration or at church. Show up and thank Him for your blessings—both seen and unseen. Gratitude opens the heart and deepens our awareness of God’s presence in our lives.
5. Pause from Work and Make Time for Family
Christmas invites us to rest. Step away from busyness and create space for family time—shared meals, conversations, prayer, laughter, and traditions. These moments become memories that last far beyond the season.
A Final Christmas Reflection on the Beauty of Family
The Holy Family teaches us that love is found in presence, sacrifice, and faithfulness. Christmas reminds us that family—however imperfect—is a sacred gift.
As we celebrate Jesus’ Birthday, may we open our homes and hearts to Him once again. May we choose to receive His love, share it generously, and allow it to shape our families, our traditions, and our lives long after the Christmas lights are taken down.
From our family at Marie Madeleine, we wish you a Christmas filled with peace, faith, and the joyful presence of Christ.

A Prayer to the Holy Family
Holy Family of Nazareth—
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—
we place our homes and hearts into your loving care.
Teach us to welcome Christ as Mary did,
with trust, humility, and a willing “yes.”
Teach us to protect and provide as Joseph did,
with quiet strength, faith, and obedience to God’s will.
May our families become places of peace,
where love is practiced daily,
forgiveness is freely given,
and Christ is always at the center.
As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas,
help us to receive God’s love more fully
and to share that love generously with one another.
Holy Family, pray for us.
Amen.
