7 Catholic Family Prayer Habits to Start This School Year

7 Catholic Family Prayer Habits to Start This School Year

The beginning of a new school year is about more than fresh notebooks, backpacks, and calendars. It's the perfect opportunity to establish routines that will help your family grow not only academically, but spiritually.

Just as we prioritize homework, sports, and extracurricular activities, we can also intentionally make room for prayer and the sacraments. The beautiful thing is that building a Catholic family routine doesn't have to be overwhelming. Small, consistent habits can become lifelong traditions that keep Christ at the center of your home.

Here are a few simple ways to build a faith-filled routine throughout the school year.

1. Begin Each Day with Morning Prayer

Before rushing out the door, gather together for a few moments of prayer. Even five minutes spent with the Lord can bring peace, set the tone for the day, and remind your family that Christ comes before everything else.

One tradition we love is giving each member of your family their own prayer booklet. Whether you're seven years old or seventy, having your own prayer booklet close at hand makes it easy to develop the habit of daily prayer and creates a routine that can last a lifetime.

Our My Daily Prayer Booklet for adults and A Young Catholic's Daily Prayer Booklet for children are wonderful companions throughout the day, filled with traditional Catholic prayers that help you begin and end each day with Christ.

Each morning, consider praying:

  • Daily Consecration to Jesus and Mary
  • Guardian Angel Prayer
  • St. Michael the Archangel Prayer
  • Morning Offering
  • Student's Prayer (found in A Young Catholic's Daily Prayer Booklet)
  • Growing Up Prayer (found in A Young Catholic's Daily Prayer Booklet)

Kids Daily Prayer Book

When you begin the day by offering your prayers, works, joys, and sufferings to Christ, you invite Him into every moment that follows. This daily act of surrender fills the heart with peace and reminds your family that God is present in every blessing and every challenge.

Daily Consecration Prayer to Jesus
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day:
for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart,
in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world,
in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all our associates,
and in particular for the intentions of our Holy Father.
Amen.

Daily Consecration Prayer to Mary
O Mary, My Queen and my Mother,
I give myself entirely to you; and to show my devotion to you,
I consecrate to you this day my eyes, my ears, my mouth,
my heart, my whole body without reserve.
Wherefore, good Mother, as I am your own,
keep me and guard me as your property and possession.
Amen.

⭐️The My Daily Prayer Booklet also includes the Angelus, traditionally prayed at 6:00 a.m., Noon, and 6:00 p.m. This beautiful devotion recalls the mystery of the Incarnation and provides three opportunities throughout the day to pause, step away from the busyness of life, and turn your thoughts back to Christ and Our Blessed Mother. Even if you can only pray it once each day, making the Angelus part of your routine is a beautiful way to sanctify your daily schedule.

You'll also find the Prayer to St. Joseph, Psalm 91, and a Canopy Prayer, making this booklet a treasured companion not just in the morning, but throughout every season of life.

2. Arrive Early to Mass & Use Your Prayer Booklet

A prayer booklet isn't only for home—it belongs in your purse, backpack, or car so it's always available whenever you need it.

One simple habit that can transform your experience at Mass is arriving minimum 20 minutes early. Instead of rushing into your pew moments before Mass begins, use this quiet time to settle your heart, leave the distractions of the week behind, and prepare yourself to encounter Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Your prayer booklet can help guide this time of preparation. Use it to pray before Mass begins, reflect on your intentions, and prepare your heart to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion. After receiving the Eucharist, continue your conversation with Jesus through the beautiful prayers included in the booklet, or bring it with you during Eucharistic Adoration as you spend time in His Real Presence.

One of the most beloved prayers included in both of our prayer booklets is the Anima Christi, traditionally prayed after receiving Holy Communion.

Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me;
Body of Christ, save me;
Blood of Christ, inebriate me;
Water from the side of Christ, wash me;
Passion of Christ, strengthen me;
O good Jesus, hear me;
Within Your wounds hide me;
Separated from You, let me never be;
From the evil one protect me;
At the hour of my death, call me;
And close to You bid me,
That with Your saints, I may be,
Praising You forever and ever. Amen.

This beautiful prayer helps us remain united with Christ after receiving the Holy Eucharist and continues our conversation with Him even after Mass has ended.

⭐️Our My Daily Prayer Booklet also includes a Prayer of Healing and Hope, offering words of comfort during difficult seasons.

⭐️As you approach Holy Communion, ask your Guardian Angel to bring your special intentions to Jesus—whether they are for your family, your health, your work, or someone in need. As your Guardian Angel accompanies you towards the altar, entrust every joy and burden to Christ, who is truly present in the Eucharist.

⭐️Make time for a weekday Mass whenever your schedule allows. Even attending once a month or once a week can become a beautiful opportunity to step away from the busyness of life, receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, and be strengthened by His grace before returning to your daily responsibilities.

3. Make Sunday Mass a Family Tradition

One of the easiest ways to build consistency is by choosing a regular Mass time that works best for your family's schedule.

Whether it's Saturday Vigil, Sunday morning, or Sunday evening, attending the same Mass each week helps establish a rhythm for the entire family.

You might even create a family tradition afterward:

  • Sunday brunch together
  • Breakfast at a favorite cafĂŠ
  • Donuts after Mass
  • A walk in the park
  • Visiting grandparents

These simple traditions make Sunday something everyone looks forward to while keeping the Lord's Day at the center of family life.

4. Schedule Weekly Eucharistic Adoration

Life becomes busy quickly during the school year, but spending even thirty minutes before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament can bring incredible peace.

Choose one day each week that works best for your family.

Some ideas include:

  • After school on Wednesdays
  • Thursday evenings together
  • Saturday mornings before errands
  • Parents taking turns to attend adoration after work

Simply sitting in silence before Jesus in the Monstrance teaches children that prayer isn't always about saying many words—it's about spending time with Someone who loves them. In Eucharistic Adoration, we are truly in the presence of Christ. Just as we make time to be with those we love, we also make time to simply be with Jesus, allowing Him to speak to our hearts in the quiet.

⭐️Eucharistic Adoration is also a beautiful time to pray the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the Church's traditional Litanies. Both Rosary and Divine Mercy prayers are found in both of the books. The My Daily Prayer Booklet holds Litany of the Most Precious Blood, Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Litany to St Joseph, and Litany of Humility.

⭐️Lift up prayers for your parish priest and all priests, thanking God for their faithful service.

⭐️Spend time thanking God for the blessings in your life while also placing your struggles, worries, and burdens into His loving hands. Jesus is always waiting to listen.

⭐️ Keep all of your prayer essentials in one place with our Our Lady of Grace Zipper Pouch. Large enough to hold prayer cards, rosaries, chaplets, prayer booklets, novena books, and other devotional items, it's perfect for bringing to Mass, Adoration, or while traveling.

5. Plan for Confession Throughout the Year

Rather than waiting until the last minute, place Confession on your family calendar.

Many families find it helpful to choose one day each month—or every other month—to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation together.

Be especially intentional about going:

  • During Advent as you prepare for Christmas
  • During Lent as you prepare for Easter

Making Confession a regular part of family life teaches children that God's mercy is always available and that returning to Him is something to be celebrated, not feared.

⭐️Both My Daily Prayer Booklet and A Young Catholic's Daily Prayer Booklet include the Act of Contrition, making it easy to prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation whenever you go.

6. End the Day with Prayer and Scripture

Bedtime offers one final opportunity to slow down before ending the day.

Our Children's Bible in Colour is a beautiful way to introduce children to Sacred Scripture through vibrant illustrations and beloved stories from both the Old and New Testaments.

As part of your evening routine, you might:

  • Read one Bible story together.
  • Pray the nighttime prayer found in the My Daily Prayer Booklet
  • Invite each family member to share three things they are thankful to God for from the day.
  • End by asking your Guardian Angel to watch over everyone through the night.

These quiet moments often become the memories children carry with them long into adulthood and help children see that prayer is simply spending time with a loving Father who delights in hearing from them.

7. Let the Liturgical Year Shape Your Prayer

One of the beautiful gifts of the Catholic Church is the liturgical year, which invites us to draw closer to Christ through different seasons of prayer and reflection. As the seasons change, so do the devotions that help us grow in our faith.

During Lent

Lent is an especially meaningful season to deepen your family's prayer life as you prepare your hearts for the celebration of Easter.

Many parishes offer additional opportunities for prayer throughout Lent. Check your local church calendar for The Divine Mercy Chaplet, often prayed on weekday evenings, and The Stations of the Cross, traditionally prayed on Fridays. Many parishes also host a fish fry afterward, making it a wonderful opportunity to gather with your parish community while observing this penitential season.

⭐️Our Stations of the Cross Story Book breaks down each station in a child-friendly way, helping young hearts better understand Christ's Passion while making this beautiful Lenten devotion accessible for the entire family to pray and meditate on together at home.

♥️ Small Habits Create Lifelong Faith

A strong Catholic family is not built overnight.

It is built through thousands of small, faithful moments woven into the rhythm of everyday life:

  • Morning prayers before school
  • Grace before meals—even at restaurants
  • Praying the Angelus throughout the day
  • Sunday Mass together as a family
  • Weekly Eucharistic Adoration
  • Regular Confession
  • Bedtime Scripture reading
  • Gratitude before sleep
  • Seasonal devotions throughout the Church year

These simple practices remind children that faith is not something reserved only for Sundays—it is a gift that belongs in every moment of our lives. Through these small habits, children begin to see that Christ is not only present inside the walls of the church, but also present in their homes, their classrooms, their friendships, and their daily routines.

As your family begins another school year, consider inviting Christ more deeply into your everyday schedule. The routines may change, children will continue to grow, and each season of life will bring new challenges and blessings, but a heart rooted in prayer will continue to bear fruit for years to come.

One of the most beautiful gifts of the Catholic faith—something many of us can easily take for granted—is the universality of the Church. No matter where we are in the world, we can walk into a Catholic church and experience something familiar. The prayers, the readings, the beauty of the sanctuary, and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist unite Catholics across every nation and language.

There is a deep comfort in knowing that wherever life takes us, we can always find a spiritual home where Christ is truly present.

The Holy Mass is where heaven and earth meet. At every celebration of the Eucharist, we join in the eternal worship of God alongside the angels and saints. Whether we are attending Mass in our hometown parish or while traveling across the world, we are participating in the same sacrifice of Christ and sharing in the same beautiful faith that has united Catholics for centuries.

This is one of the greatest gifts we can pass on to our children: the understanding that they belong to something greater than themselves. A faith that travels with them wherever they go. A Church that welcomes them wherever they are. A God who is always near.

Whether it is praying together before the school day begins, attending Mass as a family, spending time with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration, or simply clipping a faith-filled keychain onto a backpack, every small act of faith plants a seed in a child’s heart. These little reminders help children know they are deeply loved by God and that they never walk alone.

At Marie Madeleine, we are honored to provide faith-filled resources that help families nurture these daily traditions and grow closer to Christ. From our My Daily Prayer Booklet and A Young Catholic’s Daily Prayer Booklet to our Church Quiet Toys, Children’s Bible in Colour, and Stations of the Cross Story Book, our hope is that these meaningful gifts become treasured companions as your family continues its journey of faith.

May this new school year be filled with joyful learning, lasting friendships, and hearts that grow ever closer to Jesus and Our Blessed Mother—one prayer, one school day, and one beautiful tradition at a time.
